Boonbox and IBM sponsor web vulnerability seminar

Web Application Security for Managers

May 29th, 2008 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM

Metropolitan Hotel Vancouver

Event Description

Security is a prominent concern for today's executive and management teams.  Over the past decade, there has been significant focus and investment in network security.  At the same time, organizations have moved to web-based applications to help efficiently serve their customers, their partners, and their employees.  We are now in a situation where most of the attacks are directed at web applications, and web application security is becoming a C-level concern.

In the first portion of our seminar, we will explain the web application security landscape as well as demonstrate and explain the kinds of hacks and attacks that are commonly used by hackers to exploit web applications. We will cover common security threats such as those outlined by security organizations including OWASP, SANs Institute and WASC.

We will conclude our presentation with an overview of the business implications resulting from application layer security threats. We will also discuss the safeguards that your organization can take to better secure your business.

About Our Speakers

Karl Snider is Manager of Professional Services and Training for Web Application Security at IBM Rational.  Karl has over 20 years experience in software and system development, product management and professional services. As director of product management at Watchfire, Karl was integral to the development of AppScan Enterprise, the industry's only platform to monitor and report online security, privacy, quality, and compliance risks. He has subsequently focused on working with IBM Rational customers as they solve their security challenges.

Karl is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and seminars, including those hosted by IEEE and SIA. He is a guest lecturer at the University of Ottawa School of Management. Vaclav Vincalek is the founder and president of Pacific Coast Information Systems Ltd. His background combines a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering and four years post-graduate university research with over fifteen years work experience in the Information Technology sector. In 1995 Mr. Vincalek founded Pacific Coast Information Systems Ltd. (PCIS). Under his leadership, PCIS evolved into a leading technology consulting services organization with a team of quality-focused professionals representing a broad range of technical and management expertise. PCIS’ client-base spans virtually every industry—in both public and private sectors. Mr. Vincalek’s primary responsibility is setting the vision, tone and strategic direction for PCIS while overseeing the day to day operations of the organization. In 2007, Mr. Vincalek brought to fruition PCIS’s new products division, Boonbox. The division was established in response to growing demand from businesses trying to remain competitive while faced with a shrinking talent pool, decreasing budgets and an increasingly complex I.T. landscape.
